Scroll for engllsh verision

——-

Performance by Maria Pecchioli with the students of Caravaggio Art High School

Public Discussion with Fernando De Filippi, Paolo Rosa, Giovanni Rubino, Roberto Lucca Taroni, Ugo La Pietra e Angelo Castucci, Tara Kaboli, Maria Pecchioli, Rhaze, Giulia Ticozzi, Claudia Ventola moderated by Caterina Iaquinta and Aria Spinelli

May 15, 2011 18:00 | Performance by Maria Pecchioli

19.00 |Meeting

Exhibition Hall, Caravaggio Art High School, Via Prinetti 47 20100 Milano

For the occasion of the exhibition Milano Radicale, Radical Intention in collaboration with Caterina Iaquinta presents a performance by Maria Pecchioli and a public discussion with Paolo Rosa, Giovanni Rubino, Fernando De Filippi, Roberto Lucca Taroni – some of the protagonists of the radical period in Milan from 1973 to 1979 – and the artists involved in the exhibition Angelo Castucci, Tara Kaboli, Maria Pecchioli, Rhaze, Giulia Ticozzi, Claudia Ventola. The public discussion will also see the important contribution of Ugo La Pietra.

With the renewed presence of important witnesses and protagonists of the period between 1973 and 1979 in Milan, the public discussion wants be seen as a structured dialogue based on the activation of a common platform. It will be a moment of analysis of artistic production and practice and as well as an analysis on the lack and need to address moments of the historical debate of the period taken into consideration.

The complexity of these historical themes can be analyzed through the identification of three key aspects that characterized these events: the influence of ideology that supported the artistic practice, the positive relationship with the social consensus, the relationship between art practices and autonomous political actions. These are prerequisites for an analysis of the artworks on display, their contextualization in the exhibition, as well as the importance of the workshops within their development.

Which are the aspects that have been assimilated within this debate? Is there a conceivable continuity between the “doings” over the past twenty years (’60-’80) and contemporary art? Which kind of transformation did the term “radical” under go, from that time until today?

“Reenactment of Spontaneous Music Concert” is a performance by Maria Pecchioli that proposes the action done by Demetrius Sratos, Patrizio Fariselli from Area in collaboration with Eugene Kelly during the workshop they held at the school of Cinisello Balsamo in 1975. The public is invited to a Spontaneous Music Concert, involving a group of students and 10 kg of apples.

The discussion and performance both result to be a reflection on the need and desire to be active as artists within contemporary society and as a analysis of the sense of being radical with the use of languages and the production of content.

I lavori

——–

Radical Intention invites you to support Milano Radicale, a collective exhibition to be held at the Caravaggio Art High School in April.

Be part of the project by contributing a minimum of 10 euros to the production of the show. Thanks to your help, Radical Intention will make the show happen!

History

Milano Radicale is a project curated by Radical Intention that was launched in Spring 2011. The theoretical assumptions that enhanced the projects’ core investigation are based on the notion of radical nature within contemporary artistic practices. The group related this concept to the history of radical art in Milan, and invited lecturers Paolo Rosa, Fernando De Filippi, Roberto Taroni and Giovanni Rubino to talk about their experience as working artists during the period between 1973 (when San Carpoforo was occupied) and 1979. A group of young artists (Angelo Castucci, Giulia Ticozzi, Claudia Ventola, Rhaze – Maddalena Fragnito & Emanuele Braga – Tara Kaboli and Iacopo Seri) who mainly work in Milan were then invited to engage with this knowledge and reflect on possible artistic approaches to the term “radical”. Radical Intention held an artist residency in August in Tuscany at Corniolo Art Platform, where the group collectively discussed and framed the direction of the group and individual work and the possible outcomes of the project.

The Exhibition

This is the third and final part of this long journey. The Caravaggio Art High School becomes a exhibition space and a laboratory for education and experimentation. Many artists will work with students by organizing workshops on the founding principles of their engagement with the project. Paolo Rosa, Fernando De Filippi, Roberto Taroni and Giovanni Rubino will take part in a conference, and will discuss with the artists participating in the show. The event has significance for the city of Milan and its recent history, as well as for the artistic community and the artists of tomorrow.

Work

A video-documentary, a collective performance, a collection of historical images, a photographic installation, a collective installation of objects that “do not recount milan”, a sound performance, workshops with students and much more.

scroll for english text

Beniamino Foschini (1981, Ravenna) è critico e curatore freelance.

_____________

Razzi (Fusées)
B.F.

I feel Milan as a city for passersby. A place to be, just for a couple of days, and only for specific reasons. The aftermath reminds me of an ambiguous city, of ill-defined contours: I confess to perceive a feeling of spleen – and it is not rhetorical. The feeling and the smell of gray are not a commonplace, but a state of being. I do not know how much the sense of belonging is part of the lives of those who live in Milan.

Milan offers metaphysical frames: between the stations of Bovisa and Villapizzone I cannot see anything, as I am lost – there are no cars, no people on the streets and sidewalks. It’s just my companion and I, a strange guide driving me through the purgatory of the suburbs, the big city. I realize I am counting the traffic lights, and every time, I start over again.

The artist’s studio – or home – is a moment of peace, a paradoxical rest during disturbing days, days in which I sweat under a light rain. While I am in the studio the frame becomes narrower, the hot tea gives me warmth, my body releases a sense of dirt that I’ve been carrying around, while walking in the streets and in the subways.

By the way, how come everything is so desolately black or dark gray, even in the green and red subway trains?

I see, look, and think about what I’ve seen. But I can also eat, of course, where it is not rhetorical to say that time has stood still: twenty years ago, say. The plasma TV, which broadcasts the football match, tells us that we are no longer in that time. Via Padova is deserted at night, thank goodness for those police cars that often rush by – chasing whom? – with their thermoses filled with coffee.

It seems that they’re pissed off and that a group is in the process of formation, while clarifying towards itself and towards others, why such mediocre delay in the realization of a true profession – I’m still talking about art. Where else could this happen but in Milan? Not in Romagna, where we are accompanied by a sweet tiredness and a wise resignation. Where a reaction is only expected to come from its soil.

I feel Milan as a city for passersby. I know the city as well as I know a landscape, of which I ignore the historical layers, while immersing myself in the intuited sensat ions. Perhaps meeting the artists is not as important as the moment in which the eye meets the surface of things.
